Albert Cambriels
Hippolyte-Albert Cambriels (born August 11, 1816 in Lagrasse , Département Aude , † December 22, 1891 in Paris ) was a French general .
Life
Cambriels joined the French Army in 1836 and rose to Brigadier General by 1870 . During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he was given command of a brigade of the newly established 12th Army Corps of the Army of Châlons . He was head wounded and captured in the Battle of Sedan . During the transport, however, he was able to escape and then made himself available again to the "Government of National Defense" in Tours .
Cambriels took over command of the Eastern Army in Besançon . With these forces he tried in vain to stop the advance of the Baden field division of the XIV Army Corps under General August von Werder . On October 2, 1870, he fought a few skirmishes near the Oignon , which then forced him to retreat to the fortified camps near Besançon. Cambriels resigned from command in November after quarrels with Garibaldi , who had been appointed commander in chief of the Freikorps .
In early 1871, Cambriels took over the 19th Army Corps in Vierzon after his return to active service . But on January 27th, his old head wound broke open again, so that he had to resign. In 1875 he took over the 10th Army Corps and retired in 1879.
Albert Cambriels died in Paris on December 22, 1891.
