The star bellflower ( Campanula isophylla ) is a species of bellflower ( Campanula ) in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae).
features
The star bellflower is an evergreen, hanging to ascending, perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 20 centimeters. It forms a rhizome . The central stem leaves are larger than the basal leaves. The basal leaves are not arranged in rosettes and are obsolete. The leaf blade is round to short heart-shaped, plump and almost glabrous to densely pubescent. It has a long stalk and up to 3.5 inches long and wide. The flower shoots are not in the axilla of rosette leaves. The calyx lobes are 3 to 4 millimeters wide and 7 to 9 millimeters long.
The flowering period extends from July to September.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.
Occurrence
The star bellflower occurs in northern Italy in western Liguria from Savona to Finale on limestone cliffs near the coast at altitudes of 0 to 400 meters.
use
The star bellflower is used as an ornamental plant for window boxes and hanging baskets. It has been in culture since 1868 at the latest. There are some varieties with a white or blue crown and variegated leaves.
