In the opening game against Chile, Demósthenes gave Brazil a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute. The first victory in their Copa America history was almost achieved. But five minutes before the end, Chile, who had previously lost 6-1 to Argentina, equalized through Hernando Salazar. After another 1-1 draw, in which the Brazilians quickly offset the Argentinians' early lead with a goal from Alencar, they should have needed a win and hoped for Argentina defeat or a draw in the last game between Argentina and Uruguay. In both cases they and one of the other two opponents would have tied on points. They achieved the lead against Uruguay in the eighth minute through the miracle striker Arthur Friedenreich , but were only ten on the field due to an injury to defender Orlando in the second half. The Urus were able to equalize after an hour - with top scorer Gradín scoring his third goal - and finally turn the game around a quarter of an hour before the end. With two points, the Brazilians ultimately only finished third.
