history

At the end of the 18th century, the idea arose to open up the Bresse by water and to build a shipping canal from the Saône to Bourg-en-Bresse for this purpose . After many interruptions, the canal was built from the mouth of the Saône to Pont-de-Vaux and put into operation in 1843. A further construction was no longer economical due to the competition from the railway. Since the canal gradually fell into disrepair, it was taken out of service in the 1950s, but repaired again in 1994 for tourist reasons.

Economical meaning

A leisure harbor has been set up in Pont-de-Vaux , which is mainly used by pleasure boats and houseboats . Smaller passenger ships also find their way through the narrow canal in places and operate excursions on the Saône.
