Cândido Antônio José Francisco Mendes de Almeida , also Candido Antonio Mendes de Almeida, (*  3. June 1928 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian university professor , lawyer , philosopher , sociologist , political scientist and writer , the important in national and international bodies took over functions .

Vita

Cândido Mendes de Almeida studied from 1950 to 1952 at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro for a bachelor's degree in law and philosophy , and a doctorate in law at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro , also known as Universidade do Brasil, in 1952.

He was visiting professor at Harvard University and the University of California . In 1997 he became rector of the Universidade Candido Mendes , a highly respected private university founded in 1902 .

He was involved in committees and institutions of the Brazilian education system and culture. He was president of the Sociedade Brasileira de Instrução (SBI) since 1962. Until 2005 he was also a member of the Brazilian Academy of Economics (Academia Brasileira de Economia). From 1997 to 1998 he was a representative of the Social Democratic Party of Brazil, the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB). He served as chief rapporteur for the President's Commission on Combating Corruption in 1994.

Candido Mendes was active in committees of international institutions, partly in a leading position: 1973–79 he was Vice President of the IPSA (International Political Science Association) founded by UNESCO and its President 1979–82. From 1976–85 he was on the governing body of the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP). In 1974 he was chairman of the program committee of the UNESCO-recognized International Social Science Council (ISSC). He belonged to the High Level Group of the Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) of the UN.

Until 2000 he was general secretary of the Académie de la Latinité , for which he organized conferences, lectured and contributed papers. Since 2004 he has been a member of the Académie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer .

Several times he was appointed to papal commissions and bodies associated with the Catholic Church, for example to the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace (Comissão Pontifícia Justiça e Paz).

Honors

Candido Mendes de Almeida was accepted into the Academia Brasileira de Letras , the Brazilian Academy of Literature in Rio de Janeiro on August 24, 1989 . He is the fifth owner of the seat number 35 named after Tavares Bastos , succeeding Celso Cunha .

In 2005 he received his doctorate honoris causa from the University of Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle).
