Cannaphila is a genus of dragonflies consisting of three species. The genus belongs to the subfamily Sympetrinae and was described in 1889 by William Forsell Kirby . Ananimal of the previously unknown species Cannaphila insularis servedas the generotype . The distribution area extends from the southwest of the United States through Central America along the Andes to northern Argentina .

Cannaphila species are medium-sized dragonflies and reach lengths between 36 and 45 millimeters. The abdomen of the males is black, that of the females light brown to red with yellowish markings. The wings are transparent. The last antenodal loader in the front wing is complete, so it extends from the Costa loader to the radial artery .
Habitat
The adults of the genus Cannaphila live in dense and light forests where they sit on branches and wait for prey.
