Cantharis nigricans , also known as gray yellow soft beetle in German, is a beetle from the family of soft beetles (Cantharidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 8 to 11 millimeters. Her head is colored yellow on the front, otherwise black. The pronotum is yellow and has a black spot in the middle, which can sometimes be missing. The black wings are finely hairy gray. Their legs are predominantly reddish-yellow in color, only the tips of the thighs ( femora ) and the rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs are black. The species can be easily distinguished from the other soft beetles.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are common throughout Central Europe and inhabit forests and their edges. There they often sit on plants. They feed primarily on insects and other small creatures, but also on pollen .
