The Canyon Diablo (German: "Devil's Gorge") is a canyon in Arizona , USA . The gorge was dug into the relatively soft sandstone of the Colorado Plateau by a tributary of the Little Colorado River , which is why it has particularly steep slopes. Its origin lies in the Coconino National Forest in the Sawmill Springs and the Sawmill Wash on the northern flank of the Mogollon Rim , on the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, from where it runs in a northeastern direction. The low water supply from the springs seeps away and evaporates quickly when the course reaches the desert climate of the open plateau. The canyon therefore only contains sporadic water today. It flows into the Little Colorado River near Leupp in the Navajo Nation Reservation .

The deepest and steepest section is crossed by Interstate Highway 40 between Winona and Winslow , 50 km east of Flagstaff . The first highway bridge from 1930 on which Route 66 led across the canyon is entered on the National Register of Historic Places . A little further north, a BNSF Railway runs on a steel viaduct over the gorge.

The Canyon Diablo settlement on the railway bridge is named after the canyon . It was created in 1882 as a short-lived settlement in the course of the railway construction, reached almost 2,000 inhabitants and became largely a ghost town after just a few months . The Meteor Crater is located south of Interstate 40 just east of the canyon. The meteorite that caused it has the official name Canyon Diablo Meteorite .
