The Little Colorado River is a left tributary of the Colorado River in the US state of Arizona . It has a length of 544 km. The river is the main drainage of the desert Painted Desert , the southwestern border it forms, and flows through the Navajo Nation , the Indian reservation of the Navajo . It flows northwest through a multitude of deep canyons , past the towns of St. Johns , Holbrook, and Winslow in Navajo County and Coconino County .

Its lower reaches are the only undeveloped part of the central reaches of the Colorado River system and the last habitat of the Gila cypha fish , one of the most critically endangered species in the United States , a member of the carp family .

Other names are Río Colorado Chiquito in Spanish, Paayu in the Hopi language and Tółchíʼíkooh in Navajo .

course

The river arises at 2,548  m in the White Mountains at the confluence of the West Fork Colorado River from the left and the East Fork Colorado River from the right in the Apache National Forest near Greer in Coconino County . Immediately afterwards the river is dammed to the artificial lake River Reservoir . It flows shortly to the northwest, then to the northeast to Springerville . The Nutrioso Creek flows here from the right , before it now mostly flows to the north-northwest, while US 189 follows a few kilometers away .

The Little Colorado River is dammed 16 km south of St. John's to Lyman Lake . After the reservoir, it reaches St. Johns and passes under US 191 before entering the Hunt Valley . It crosses under US 180 twice before reaching Holbrook .

The river flows at 823  m about 115 km north of Flagstaff in the Grand Canyon and the Grand Canyon National Park from the left into the Colorado River.
