Cap Skirring

Cap Skirring is located on the Atlantic coast of Casamance in the south of Senegal , near the border with Guinea-Bissau . It is known as an international tourist center and is mainly visited by French-speaking people.

history

Actually a traditional fishing village, Cap Skirring was discovered as a holiday region by the French from Ziguinchor in the early 1960s. At that time, Cap Skirring was still surrounded by dense forests and had almost no regional significance.

At the end of the 1960s, members of the Aéroclub de Ziguinchor created an unpaved runway for a small airport. This drew the attention of Club Méditérranée to the place from which the company began to relocate the people living there with the consent of the Senegalese government under Léopold Sédar Senghor in 1973 in order to be able to build a holiday complex on site.

The runway was lengthened and paved so that larger jets, for example from Dakar or directly from Europe , such as Paris , Marseille , etc., can also be handled. The international airport Cap Skirring contributed greatly to the success of this holiday region and attracted other large hotels.

The political unrest due to the separatist Casamance conflict with the Senegalese government did nothing to detract from the growth and success of Cap Skirrings as a holiday region until 1990. Since then, however, fewer and fewer tourists have come, even if the seaside resort in Casamance is considered the last remnant of the ideal world . The conflict can largely be hidden here. Nevertheless, several hotels had to close by 2013 due to the decline in tourism. Club Med still employs a good half of the entire village for six months a year. When there is no work in the club in the off-season, people tend to their fields or fishing.

geography

Cap Skirring beach

Cap Skirring is located in the Oussouye department about 70 kilometers west-southwest of the regional prefecture of Ziguinchor near the border with Guinea-Bissau and about 85 kilometers southwest of Bignona . The settlements at Cap Skirring are part of the Communauté rurale Diembéring in the Arrondissement of Kabrousse .

The sandy beach is very fine-grained and the water is always pleasantly warm and noticeably salty. This section is protected by a rock of volcanic origin to the north, which extends far into the surf.

The main season is limited to the six months of the dry season , as mosquitoes multiply very strongly in the rainy season . Heavy rainfall accompanied by storms must also be expected every day . The Portuguese galley can also appear on the beach for a short period each year .

geology

There is evidence of a very old volcanic system in the Cap Skirring area. It is precisely the presence of these volcanic rocks that protrude far into the sea that gives the beach its excellent properties.
