Capitan is a city in Lincoln County in the US state of New Mexico in the United States with 1443 inhabitants (2000) .

The city is located in the south of the county in south-central New Mexico and has a total area of ​​8.3 km² without any significant water surface.

history

Today's Capitan has been settled since 1884, but was known under the name "Gray" until 1900 after its first inhabitant. The El Paso and Northeastern Railroad built a railway line from Carrizozo to the coal mines a mile west of Capitan . Mining came to an end there around 1905 and fishing and hunting became the most important source of income in the village.

In the spring of 1950, a young black bear with smoking fur ventured into the city after a forest fire, which was subsequently called the Smokey Bear and which became the mascot of the area. The bear was taken to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, DC , where it lived for the next 26 years. After his death he was buried in Capitan. The Smokey Bear Historical Park was named after him and the Smokey Bear Days are celebrated every year on the first weekend in May .

Demographic data

After the census of 2000, there 1,443 people in 605 households and 416 families lived. The population density was 174.1 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 87.53% White, 0.55% African American, 1.46% Native American, 0.55% Asian, and other groups.

Of the 605 households, 26.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.00% were married couples living together, 9.80% were a single mother, 31.20% were non-families, 27.40% were made up of single households and 10.40% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91 people.

The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.4 men.

The median income for a household in the 27,188 USD , and the median income for a family was 32,115 USD. Males had a median income of $ 23,500 versus $ 16,902 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,062. 8.30% of families and 13.00% of the population are below the poverty line.
