Capri fisherman

Capri-Fischer ("When the red sun sinks into the sea at Capri ...") is a German hit that became a global success in the recording by Rudi Schuricke at the end of the 1940s.

history

The German composer Gerhard Winkler wrote the song in 1943. Playback of the piece on the radio was banned because the US Army had already landed on Capri in September 1943 . The text is by Ralph Maria Siegel , the father of the composer Ralph Siegel . The first interpreter of the song, also to be heard on shellac record , was the singer Magda Hain . It was a discovery by Gerhard Winkler and is known for its coloratura soprano . Also Rudi Schuricke sang the song in 1943 for Polydor with the orchestra of the Plaza on a record.

In May 1947 the song appeared on Amiga in what was then the SBZ with Kurt Reimann as the singer. In the western zones and the young Federal Republic of Germany , Rudi Schuricke's version became very popular from 1946. The interpretation recorded by the singer Gretl Rath was also popular in Switzerland . A version with English text (author Don Pelosi - Leon Powers) was published in 1948 in the United States by Gracie Fields under the title Fisherman of Capri (Bella Bella Marie) .

reception

The song exemplified the German longing for Italy , which found expression in numerous romantic hits during the Second World War and experienced a second bloom in the era of the economic miracle , which made it possible for many West Germans to travel to the Mediterranean for the first time . Many later German hits took up the prototype pattern given by the Capri fishermen; The song became the forerunner of a genre of its own that many pop singers still cultivate today.

The piece became an evergreen and was part of the repertoire of many artists such as Peter Kraus , Paola , Die Flippers , GG Anderson and Vico Torriani . Max Raabe says that his palace orchestra added the title to its repertoire at a special request from the former Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl . The NDW singer ZaZa also recorded a fast version in 1982.
