Capsodes gothicus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 5.7 to 7.4 millimeters long. The species of the genus Capsodes are predominantly black in color and have a striking orange-red and whitish pattern. Their heads are rather short and broad, and the antennae are completely black. In Capsodes gothicus there is no orange midline on the pronotum and the upper side of the body is long and darkly fluffed. The sides of the pronotum are straight and the second antennae is about the same length as the third and fourth combined. The extent of the orange-colored drawing is variable. The males are fully winged (macropter), the females have slightly shortened (brachyptere) wings. The nymphs are dark red and black in color and have long, black hair.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed in almost all of Europe to the northern Mediterranean and east to Siberia and China. In Germany, it occurs frequently, especially in the south, in the north German lowlands it has only been found locally and is rare. It is also missing locally in central parts of Germany. In Austria it is common and not uncommon.

Way of life

As with Capsodes flavomarginatus, it is not known which plants the bugs live on. The animals can be found in the thick herbaceous layer in open areas. They can be caught by stripes with a net and it is believed that they feed polyphagous on different plant families. Suspected host plants include nettles ( Urtica ), willowherb ( Epilobium ), yarrow ( Achillea ), St. John's herbs ( Hypericum ), rubus , rennet ( Galium ) and horn clover ( lotus ). The nymphs can mainly be found in May and June, the adults from June to August, sometimes even in the second half of May.
