Carcharhinus Tjutjot is a shark art from the family of the requiem shark (Carcharhinidae). It occurs in the South China Sea between Taiwan and Indonesia and lives from the coast to depths of less than 100 meters. The species was named after an Indonesian word for shark.

Appearance and characteristics

Carcharhinus tjutjot is a small shark and reaches a maximum length of 87 to 88 cm. It has a relatively long, pointed muzzle. In addition to the main tip, the teeth in the front upper jaw have a roughly serrated blade-like part. The lower front teeth are narrower and slightly slanted. Their margins are notched and finely sawn. There are a total of 26 to 28 teeth in a row of teeth in the upper jaw and 24 to 30 teeth in a row of teeth in the lower jaw. There is an interdorsal ridge with a moderate to heavy ridge. The first dorsal fin is relatively long and not sickle-shaped. It starts over the middle of the inner edge of the pectoral fins. Their height is 1.4 to 2 times their length. The second dorsal fin is much smaller, triangular with a broad base and lies symmetrically opposite the sickle-shaped anal fin. The height of the second dorsal fin is 29 to 37% of the height of the first dorsal fin. The height of the slightly sickle-shaped anal fin reaches 0.9 to 1.3 times the height of the second dorsal fin. Carcharhinus tjutjot is light brown on the back and whitish on the belly. On the second dorsal fin there is a black spot on the upper third of the fin. The remaining fins are monochrome. The number of eddies is 113 to 129. There are no injection holes .

Systematics

The shark was in 1939 by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker under the name tjutjot Prionodon described , but in 1982 by Garrick with the whitecheek shark ( Carcharhinus dussumieri ) as synonymous . In 2012 William T. White revalidated the species after examining and comparing several specimens of C. tjutjot and C. dussumieri . Within the genus Carcharhinus , C. tjutjot belongs to the C. sealei - C. dussumieri group, small Indo-Pacific sharks, which all have similar teeth, a similar fin and snout shape and always have a dark spot on the second dorsal fin, while all others Fins are monochrome.
