The forewings are identical to those of the Heilziest thick-headed butterfly ( Carcharodus flocciferus ). There are clear white discal and submarginal spots on the hind wings . The underside of the forewings is generally gray, that of the hind wings is mostly light gray with washed-out light spots. On the underside of the forewings, the male also has strong, dark hair growth. Both sexes have the same wing drawings. The variation of the moths in size, but also in the coloring of the upper side of the wings is considerable.

Albania , Macedonia , Romania , Bulgaria and Greece , widespread eastwards in Asia Minor , Northern Iran and in the Ukraine (Crimea), Caucasus region as far as Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. A small isolated occurrence exists in Northern Hungary . In the south there is a small occurrence in Wadi Al Hisha ( Jordan ), the species is also found in Israel. The butterfly can be found on dry, hot, rocky and flower-rich slopes, ravines, (poor) meadows and abandoned cultivated land up to 1500 meters.

Way of life

The moths fly in two or three generations from April to August. The eggs are laid on different species of mint family (Lamiaceae) (e.g. Zieste ( Stachys ) and others). The caterpillar will probably overwinter in the last instar.
