The cardiocrinum ( Cardiocrinum ) are a plant genus in the family of the lily family (Liliaceae). The genus consists of only three perennial species, all of which are hardy. The genus is closely related to the lilies ( Lilium ), to which their species were previously also counted.
description
Cardiocrinum species grow from one seed over a period of five years in an increasingly dense rosette of large, heart-shaped, pure green leaves with a glossy surface. When they are ripe they develop a tall, unbranched flower stem. When flowering begins at the beginning of June, four to twenty pure white, up to 20 cm long, tubular trumpet flowers hang on the flower stalk, which have a distinct and pleasant smell. The flowers can have a purple stripe on the underside.
In addition to generative reproduction via seeds, Cardiocrinum species also reproduce vegetatively. The plants die after the seeds ripen, but develop up to ten daughter bulbs, which reach flowering maturity in three to five years.

All species of the genus Cardiocrinum are native to Asia . They prefer locations in partial shade as well as loose and well-fertilized, always slightly moist, peat-based soil.
use
The giant Himalayan lily ( Cardiocrinum giganteum ) is occasionally found in the trade as a rare plant. There is no known other use for Cardiocrinum species.
Systematics
In the genus Cardiocrinum three types can be distinguished:
- Chinese giant lily ( Cardiocrinum cathayanum (EH Wilson) Lindl. ): Up to 80 cm tall, from central and eastern China

Heart-leaved Japanese giant lily ( Cardiocrinum cordatum (Thunb.) Makino ): 100 to 250 cm tall, in moist coniferous and bamboo forests in Japan on the southern Honshu Island, Shikoku and Kyushu, on Sakhalin and the southern Kuril Islands; with an additional variety:
- Cardiocrinum cordatum var. Glehnii (F. Schmidt) H. Hara : flowers tubular and greenish.

Himalayan giant lily ( Cardiocrinum giganteum (Wall.) Makino ): 250 to 400 cm; it occurs in the Himalayas to China, with two varieties:
- Common Himalayan Giant Lily ( Cardiocrinum giganteum var. Giganteum ): In the high mountains of the Eastern Himalayas to Myanmar and Tibet
- Rotstängelige Himalayan cardiocrinum ( Cardiocrinum giganteum var. Yunnanense (Leichtlin ex Elwes) Stearn ; Syn .: Cardiocrinum mirabile (Franch) Makino. ): Flowers upright and centered strongly red, homeland: China and Myanmar
