Carin Grudda

Carin Grudda (born August 17, 1953 in Gudensberg near Kassel ) is a German sculptor who works in bronze, but also works as a painter and graphic artist. She lives in Liguria , Italy.

Life

After Carin Grudda graduated from high school in Kassel in 1972, she began studying art history and philosophy at the University of Gießen , which she completed in 1980 with a thesis on Dadaism . This was followed in 1981 by an internship at ARD in Madrid with a focus on film / television. She then completed various study visits to Rome , Paris , Miami and Lanzarote . From 1982 on she worked as a freelance artist, initially as a painter, for which she made further study trips to the USA and China since 1986 . In 1998 she began to work with bronze, which has determined her artistic work ever since.

Carin Grudda began her freelance work in 1982 in Frankfurt am Main, which she left in 1993 to expand the old aristocratic residence of Baroness von Wallbrunn (built in 1789) into a new work center in the wine village of Großwinternheim near Ingelheim am Rhein . She worked in the studio located here until the year 2000, as she moved her life and work to Italy, initially in Tuscany and later in Rome, prompted by her intensive work contacts with the bronze foundry Pietro Caporrella. In the small Ligurian town of Lingueglietta (member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy) and district of Cipressa ) near Imperia , she found a suitable place, where she also built her sculpture park “Tra i Mondi” (Between the Worlds), which attracts numerous visitors in summer. Since 2008 she has also had a studio in Rome.

From Grudda's preoccupation with Dadaism , “play” and “chance” gain a meaning from which an orientation towards “trace and feeling” emerges and from which central aspects of her artistic work develop. During a scholarship in Miami in 1991, then in Frankfurt am Main and finally in Ingelheim, she experimented with additive image formats, initially putting together autonomous images "group paintings" and later dividing large-format image cycles into small units "blue pictures". In the late 1990s, the image carriers change. Grudda paints all kinds of wooden surfaces, which she brings back to the cultural process as "objets trouvés" from all possible former functional contexts and shapes them into assemblages by applying numerous objects. In her work she always refers to the philosophy of ethical skepticism of her Gießen teacher Odo Marquard .

Printmaking

As part of a scholarship for prints from the state of Saxony in Leipzig , Grudda began in 1992 in the Künstlerhaus Hohenossig and the Leipzig workshops for artistic prints Rössler to familiarize himself with the technique of drypoint etching and to develop it further in her own way. Based on the traces of her work places, which she transfers from the street asphalt by slinging, throwing, sanding, pulling onto the still virgin printing plate and then further processing it with the burin, she develops a graphic image from the "traces" obtained from it, in which she addresses her self-awareness of “being on the move” (Deutsche Bahn AG, Annual Report 2001). Since Grudda is increasingly moving to the large format in this technique and swapping the burin for the electric hand drill, for example, she develops large-format pictorial bodies from the limited format of the etching, which extend to wall-filling installations such as the "WILD SHEEP HUNT" in the 3.75 m × format 6.65 m, 2005.

Through an art award in Italy, Grudda made the acquaintance of the Caporella art foundry in Rome and Tuscany in 1998, where she got to know all the techniques of bronze casting, which from then on she made the center of her artistic work. Right from the start, she places great value on producing and editing her bronze sculptures by hand as far as possible, from model to finished figure. After producing numerous autonomous sculptures, ranging from natural casts of snail shells to monumental bronze sculptures, such as the »BLUE Miau«, Grudda is increasingly commissioned to design public spaces and traffic rondels in Germany and Italy. Numerous bronze sculptures are in public ownership in Germany, Italy and Switzerland. During her work at the Caporrella art foundry, Grudda meets well-known international bronze artists such as Daniel Spoerri , Luciano Castelli , Nunzio , Arman , Tommaso Cascella , Giuseppo Gallo and Enzo Gucchi , with whom she is in lively artistic contact .
