Carl Abegg-Arter (born April 10, 1836 in Küsnacht , † August 23, 1912 in Zurich ; also Karl Abegg-Arter ) was a Swiss raw silk merchant and banker. He was the father of August and Carl Abegg .

Life

In 1852 his parents sent him to Milan for three years to learn the silk business. He then worked in a silk factory in Hottingen . At the age of 21 he went to New York as their advocate . In 1861 he was co-founder and until 1884 co-owner of the company Rübel & Abegg in Zurich. He then took a stake in Abegg & Co. , a company founded by his son Carl. He also served on the board of directors from 1868 and from 1883 to 1911 as president of the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt in Zurich. He was also a co-founder of the Switzerland Transport Insurance Company, the Zurich Insurance Company , the Bank for Oriental Railways and the Bank for Electrical Companies . At times he was part of the administration of the Saloniki-Monastir Railway Company, the Baghdad Railway , the Gotthard Railway , the German-Overseas Electricity Company, the Compania Barcelonesa de Electricidad and the Swiss-Argentine Mortgage Bank. He led the presidium of the supervisory board of the Strassberg electricity company and was vice-chairman of the board of directors of Banca Commerciale Italiana . He was a long-time member of the Zurich Commercial Court and a promoter of cultural and humanitarian efforts, especially of the University of Zurich . He found his final resting place in the Enzenbühl cemetery .
