Carl August Hagberg (born July 7, 1810 in Lund ; † January 9, 1864 there ) was a Swedish linguist .

Life

Hagberg studied at Uppsala University , where he was appointed lecturer in Greek in 1833. 1835–36 he made a trip to Germany and France, moved in Paris in the neo-romantic circles and after his return home published a book, Om den nya franska vitterheten (Stockholm 1837).

Since 1840 professor of modern languages ​​and aesthetics at Lund University , he began and completed his masterful translation of Shakespeare ( Shakespeare's dramatiska arbeten , Lund 1847–51, 12 volumes) and in 1851 became one of the eighteen of the Swedish Academy of Sciences . In 1848/49 he was the rector of the university.

Hagberg also enjoyed a great reputation as a speaker. In 1858 he received the newly established professorship for Nordic languages ​​at Lund University.
