Carl August von Groote

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl August von Groote (born July 1, 1831 in Cologne , † February 17, 1897 in Godesberg ) was an administrative officer and long-time mayor of the community of Godesberg.

Life

Carl August von Groote came from the Groote family and was a grandson of Everhard von Groote . In 1857 he was appointed mayor of Godesberg, succeeding Melchior Julius von Buggenhagen, who had been mayor here from 1841 to 1851. Since 1816 Godesberg was the seat of a mayor's office in the Bonn district , which belonged to the Cologne district. The administrative unit consisted of seven municipalities. In addition to Godesberg (about today's Alt-Godesberg ) there were Friesdorf , Lannesdorf , Mehlem , Muffendorf , Plittersdorf and Rüngsdorf .

Groote had a villa (also known as the Palais von Groote ) built on today's Rüngsdorfer Strasse in 1862 , where he lived with his family. From 1863, the “mayor's office” of the community of Godesberg was located in a small annex financed by Groote, in which seven community employees worked until his retirement.

Together with the local council, Groote tried to establish Godesberg as a spa and bathing resort. In August 1864 the community bought the Godesberg Draitschbrunnen from the Prussian State Ministry , which no longer wanted to finance the maintenance. The mayor attached great importance to the quality of the well water and therefore had water analyzes carried out on a regular basis. In the absence of sufficient funds from the community, Groote managed to find sponsors for a beautification of the place and to bind them to the beautification association founded in 1869 .

Groote is said to have conducted his official business in Godesberg in a mild and friendly manner. He is said to have handled the cash and files management carelessly and so frequently incurred administrative fines. In 1888 he was retired. His successor as mayor was Anton Dengler . Groote was buried in the castle cemetery in Godesberg in 1897 . In 1859 Groote had married Paula Freiin von Böselager (1838-1904) in Peppenhoven ; one son was Eberhard Ritter and Edler von Groote, auf Kähmen und Murzig (* 1862).

In 1920 the former mayor was honored with the naming of Von-Groote-Platz located between Rüngsdorfer Straße and Karl-Finkelnburg-Straße in the Rüngsdorf district . A memorial plaque initiated by the publisher Norman Rentrop and created by the Bonn artist Friedemann Sander was unveiled at the entrance to Groote's villa in November 2000.
