Carl Christian Leberecht Franke (born November 24, 1796 in Stenzig near Sonnenburg ; † May 1, 1879 Halle an der Saale ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Carl Christian Leberecht Franke came from modest backgrounds. He attended the pedagogy in Züllichau and fought in the Prussian army in the Napoleonic Wars against France from 1813 . After his return he began to study theology at the University of Halle . He then worked as a teacher in Magdeburg . Shortly afterwards he became pastor of St. Mary's Church in Halle.

From 1823 Franke worked as a deacon . Three years later he graduated in Halle with a degree in theology and from then on held lectures. In 1834 he was appointed archdeacon and professor at the University of Halle. In 1848 he became superintendent .

His lectures dealt particularly with catechetics , homiletics and theological encyclopedia. From the university he separated more and more over time, since he belonged to the rationalist theology and also enforced this view. Later the university dismissed all theology professors who represented rationalism, including Franke. He stopped lecturing in the 1850s. He gave up the pastoral office in 1875 due to his age.

Franke left behind his son, the medic and Professor Walter Franke .

Franke made a name for himself as a pastor, especially during the cholera epidemic of 1832. In addition to a document about obtaining the degree of licentiate, several sermons and a commemorative publication, he wrote articles for the magazine for preachers . From 1824 he was a member of the Masonic lodge Zu den Drei Degen in Halle and from 1863 to 1873 its master of the chair .
