Carl Emil Hansen Ostenfeld (born August 3, 1873 in Randers , † January 16, 1931 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ostenf. "

Life

Ostenfeld studied botany at the University of Copenhagen with Eugen Warming with a master's degree in 1897. From 1900 he was inspector at the Botanical Museum in Copenhagen. In 1906 he received his doctorate and in 1918 he became professor of botany at the Veterinary and Agricultural College in Copenhagen. In 1931 he succeeded Christen Raunkiær as professor of botany at the University of Copenhagen and director of the Botanical Garden .

He explored the flora of Denmark, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland (including marine plankton), and Western Australia (where he traveled in 1914). He has been on expeditions to Greenland several times, as a student in 1895 and 1896 (Ingolf expedition).

He was on the council of the Carlsberg Foundation (from 1921) and knight of the Dannebrog Order . He was a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences . In 1917 he received the Prix Desmazières of the Académie des Sciences . In 1928 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Honors

According to him, the plant genus Feldstonia P.S.Short from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) and the mushroom genus Ostenfeldiella Ferd. & Winge named.
