Carl Günther (born November 22, 1885 in Ottensen ; † September 9, 1958 in Hamburg ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ) who was best known for the bel canto repertoire.

Carl Günther came from a humble background (his father was a Piepenmoker , so he made tobacco pipes) and initially worked as a shipyard worker at Blohm + Voss . On August 31, 1912 Günther made his operatic debut at the Hamburg State Opera , where he appeared as Florestan in Fidelio ; The conductor was Otto Klemperer . As a result, he developed into a celebrated tenor and was honored as a Hamburg Chamber Singer in 1928 .

Because of his origins from the people, the popular singer in Hamburg was called us Kuddl . After his opera career he worked as a singing teacher .

Günther was put to rest in September 1958 in the Ohlsdorf cemetery . His grave is still preserved today (Grabfeld U10, No. 255/256).

Recordings of well-known arias and songs that Günther made with piano or orchestral accompaniment for Odeon (1917), Vox (1921) and Deutsche Grammophon (1922) were released on double CD in 2010.
