Carl Georg Scheuermann (born November 3, 1803 in Copenhagen ; † May 5, 1859 there ) was a Danish landscape painter .

Family and career

Scheuermann came from a Copenhagen merchant family. His mother was Charlotte Louise (nee Zinn, 1781-1860), who was married to Georg Frederik Vilhelm Scheuermann (1771-1811) since 1802. He had previously been married to Cathrine Magdalene (nee Fiedler, * 1775) since 1798, who died of a fever on September 29, 1800, barely 25 years old.

Scheuermann had three younger sisters.

  • Julie Augusta (1805–1879) ⚭ Frederik Hammerich
  • Emilie Louise († 1871) ⚭ Administrator Axel de Gahler
  • Agnes Camilla (July 31, 1808 - March 2, 1891) ⚭ May 10, 1834 with the composer Emil Horneman (May 6, 1809 - May 29, 1870) later divorced

His father's first marriage had two sons

  • Frederik Ferdinand Scheuermann, who died as a student in 1820
  • Vilhelm Theodor Scheuermann (1800-1830) was a landowner in Jutland

Since his parents were very interested in music and the fine arts, he was sent to the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen with the aim of becoming a landscape painter . His father was the son of a publisher who came from Mecklenburg and had immigrated to Denmark. His business went well until around 1807 one of his merchant ships was destroyed and he suddenly died a few years later.

An inheritance enabled him to live an independent life as an artist. He made several trips through northern Germany and Norway , but mainly painted subjects on the Danish island of Zealand (Sjælland).

Most of his pictures are in private ownership, but also in the Royal Collection of Paintings in Copenhagen. In addition to a rather sporadic exhibition activity (1831–1835, 1841–1843 and 1850), the strongly religious and philanthropic artist devoted himself more and more to social charity.

Scheuermann remained unmarried and died in Copenhagen in 1859.
