Carl Gerhard Poppe (born October 24, 1813 in Bremen ; † June 2, 1891 in Bremen) was a German builder and researcher in antiquities.

biography

Poppe was the son of town planner and carpenter Johann Georg Poppe (1769-1826) and nephew of the architect Jacob Ephraim Polzin (1778-1851). He was married to Bertha Hirschfeld (1822–1900). Both had five children.

Like his father, he learned the trade of a builder . He supplemented his knowledge through study trips to Italy , Greece and Asia Minor . He made many preserved drawings about ancient architecture and its sculptures. In Bremen numerous houses in the style of classicism were built according to his plans and partly at his own risk . These include the houses from 1864 to 1866 Am Dobben 117, 118 to 127, the packing houses on the Teerhof (destroyed in the war) and on the Stephanitor bulwark at the Stephanikirche (destroyed in the war). He was unable to sell many packing houses after the trade in the colonial goods coffee, tobacco and rice stalled due to the customs connection. His construction company went bankrupt in 1868. He then worked as an architect and builder in Bremen and Bremerhaven.
