Carl Gottlieb Gottschalk

Carl Gottlieb Gottschalk (also Karl Gottlieb Gottschalk , born July 8, 1824 in Pobershau , † May 26, 1887 in Freiberg ) was a German mining official and university professor .

life and work

Gottschalk came from a family of miners that spanned several generations. His father of the same name, coming from the simplest of backgrounds, made it to the top level . Gottschalk junior showed his interest in the mining profession already in elementary school. At the age of just 14, he attended the Hauptbergschule in Freiberg from 1838 and the Freiberg Bergakademie from 1842 .

Since 1845 he was employed as a gang man at the Alte Hoffnung Gottes Erbstolln in Kleinvoigtsberg and in 1846 was transferred to the Grube Segen Gottes Erbstolln in Gersdorf . When a detonator detonated through no fault of his own, he was severely injured so that he could not resume his service.

After a 2-year illness he took a job as a copyist at the Oberzehntenamt, where he a. a. had to accompany the silver car from Freiberg to the Dresden mint . He quickly rose in the civil service career and was u. a. 1853 tithe clerk, 1857 Hüttenraiter and 1869 Oberhüttenraiter at the Saxon Oberhüttenamt, where he was responsible for accounting. In 1882 he became a mountain ridge .

But he also worked at the Bergakademie Freiberg. Since 1859 he taught bookkeeping. In 1877 he was appointed professor for mining and metallurgy accounting and mining statistics.

Since 1873, at the instigation of the Saxon Ministry of Finance, he published the yearbook for mining and metallurgy in the Kingdom of Saxony . For health reasons he was released from this position in 1886. He retired on May 1st, 1887, but died on May 26th, when he was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Saxon Order of Civil Merit . On May 29th, he was buried in the Donatsfriedhof under the guidance of miners and students .

Carl Gottlieb Gottschalk Prize

Since 2011, the student council of the Faculty of Economics at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg has awarded the Carl Gottlieb Gottschalk Prize annually to professors and employees who have shown particular commitment to the students of the faculty.
