Porto Gole , also Portogol , is a town in the administrative sector of Mansôa in Guinea-Bissau .

The place has 216 inhabitants (as of 2009), mostly belonging to the Balantas ethnic group.

geography

The place on the banks of the Rio Geba is on the road between the capital Bissau and Bafatá , a few kilometers from Bambadinca .

history

Porto Gole is considered to be the place where the Portuguese explorers first set foot in what is now Guinea-Bissau. A memorial there commemorates Diogo Gomes , who was the first European to land here in 1456.
