Carl Gottlob Küttner (born February 15, 1755 in Wiedemar in the Electorate of Saxony , † February 14, 1805 in Leipzig ) was a German teacher and travel writer.

Life

Carl Gottlob Küttner was the eldest son of the local pastor of the same name in Wiedemar and his wife Johanna Regina Börsch. In 1765 he started school in Annaberg . From Easter 1771 to March 1776 he studied at the University of Leipzig . He then received a position as court master in Basel . Every week he sent his school and university friend Schenk in Leipzig a diary in which he described three journeys that took him across Switzerland. This resulted in the three-volume “Letters of a Saxon from Switzerland to his friend in Leipzig” with a critical overview of all literature published about Switzerland up to that point. He made a similar description of England, where he worked as a private teacher from 1782. Under the title “Contributions to the Knowledge of the Interior of England and its Inhabitants” 16 booklets appeared, with which he gained general recognition among statistical writers. He also wrote letters about Ireland, France and Holland and translated the comedy "The Natural Son" by Cumberland . In 1792 he returned to Saxony. His last work in four volumes was the "Journey through Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and part of Italy in the years 1797, 1798, 1799" published in 1801.
