Carl Wilhelm Eugen Henschen (born July 9, 1877 in Geislingen an der Steige , Württemberg ; † April 6, 1957 in Basel ) was a Swiss surgeon .

Life

Henschen completed his Matura in Zurich , where he was naturalized in 1894. From 1896 to 1901 he studied medicine at the Universities of Zurich and Kiel . He worked as an assistant at the Pathological Institutes of the Universities of Zurich (Director: Paul Ernst) and Heidelberg . From 1903 he was an assistant doctor at the Surgical University Clinic in Zurich. In the winter semester of 1904/05 he received his doctorate at the University of Zurich, and in 1908 he received his habilitation at the University of Tübingen . In 1909/10 he worked at the surgical clinic in Tübingen. From 1910 he worked as a senior physician under Rudolf Ulrich Krönlein and later Ferdinand Sauerbruch at the Zurich Cantonal Hospital and taught as a private lecturer at the University of Zurich. In 1914 he was appointed titular professor (representing Sauerbruch after his participation as a volunteer in World War I) . From 1917 Henschen was chief physician at the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital . From 1926 to 1948 he was a full professor of surgery at the University of Basel . 1932 Dean of the Medical Faculty and from 1944 to 1945 Rector of the University of Basel.
