Carl Johan Schlyter (born January 29, 1795 in Karlskrona , † December 26, 1888 in Lund ) was a Swedish legal historian, legal scholar and university professor.

life and work

Schlyter studied law at the universities of Lund and Rostock . In Rostock he earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy, in Lund he received his doctorate in law in 1820. In 1822 he and Hans Samuel Collin were commissioned by King Karl XIV. John of Sweden to collect and publish all of the old Swedish laws. This assignment, which Schlyter continued to fulfill on his own after Collins's death in 1833, was not completed until 1877. While working on the collection, he was a professor of legal history at Uppsala University from 1835 and at Lund University from 1838. 1839-1840 he was the rector of the university. From 1842 he held the first professorship for legal history at Lund University, but was released from his teaching duties from 1852 to 1876 to work on the collection of laws.

Schlyter's life's work can be seen in the publication of this law in a source-critical edition in 13 volumes. For this work he developed an excellent knowledge of Old Swedish , the language in which most of the medieval and even older legal texts were written. In addition to this task, which encompasses every area of life, Schlyter had little time for other work. Nonetheless, there are writings on the state of contemporary law in Sweden and on legal philosophy. Through his works Schlyter became an essential part and important promoter of legal history in Sweden.

Schlyter was admitted to the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies in 1837 , to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1856 and to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1869 . In 1873 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the North Star Order .

Socially, Schlyter was not particularly sociable. Deeply religious and convinced of the importance and correctness of his work, he did not accept any criticism and soon lost it with almost all of his colleagues in Lund. After Schlyter's death, not a single one was willing to contribute to a commemorative publication.
