Carl Julius Bergius

Carl Julius Bergius (born December 14, 1804 in Berlin ; † October 28, 1871 ibid) was a German political scientist and economic writer.

Bergius came from an old family from Pomerania , one of his ancestors was the court chamber councilor Johann Heinrich Bergius. Bergius was married to Clara Manera, with her he had a son, Heinrich Bergius. The chemist Friedrich Bergius (1884–1949) was his grandson.

At the age of 18 Bergius completed his school years with the Abitur in 1822. In the same year he began a commercial apprenticeship at von Asten's shop . Bergius then began to study camera sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin and completed this course in 1828 with a doctorate . Immediately thereafter, Bergius began his legal clerkship, which he completed in Potsdam .

Bergius continued his career through various provincial administrations in Prussia. As a government councilor, he wrote his first major work on Prussia in terms of constitutional law in 1838 . In 1839 he was transferred to the financial administration in Breslau . There, Bergius was entrusted with a teaching position with a focus on economics and after his habilitation, Bergius worked there as a private lecturer from 1851. Ten years later, with his appointment as ao. Professor of Political Science the high point of his career. As such, Bergius wrote his second major work The Principles of Public Finance with a special reference to Prussia (1865).

Bergius retired into private life around 1868 and died at the age of 66 on October 28, 1871 in Berlin.
