Carl Magee

Carlton Cole "Carl" Magee (born January 1872 in Iowa , † 1946 in El Paso ) was an American lawyer and publisher . He patented the first parking meter .

In 1922 Magee founded the newspaper "Magees Independent". In 1923 the name changed to "New Mexico State Tribune" and in 1933 to Albuquerque Tribune . In 2008, the magazine stopped appearing.

Magee became known for uncovering the Teapot Dome scandal , a bribery scandal during the tenure of US President Warren G. Harding . Magee was the editor of the newspaper until his transfer to the "Oklahoma City News".

In journalism he is known for the motto “Give Light and the People Will Find Their Own Way”.

Magee switched from the Republican Party to the Democrats and ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate .

Magee is considered to be the inventor of the parking meter . On May 13, 1935, he filed a patent for a “coin-controlled parking meter”. The patent was registered under patent number 2,118,318 on May 4, 1938. The first installed "Black Maria" parking meter was installed in Oklahoma City .

He died in El Paso in 1946 .
