Carl Nebe.

Carl Johann Eduard Nebe (born January 3, 1858 in Braunschweig , † February 7, 1908 in Berlin ) was a German opera singer with a bass-baritone voice .

Life

Carl Nebe grew up as the son of the actor Eduard Nebe (1820–1888) in Karlsruhe and, according to his parents' wishes, was to become a banker, but decided on an artistic career. Nebe received training in singing from his father and from Felix Mottl , Wilhelm Sedlmayer and Joseph Staudigl. Nebe made his debut at the Hoftheater Wiesbaden in 1878 and came to the Hoftheater Dessau in 1881 , where he stayed until 1890 and became known for his “fresh, liberating humor” in the role of Buffo . He then went to the renowned court theater in Karlsruhe , where he was involved in the first complete performance of Hector Berlioz's opera Les Troyens under his teacher Felix Mottl in 1890 . From 1900 he worked “at the special request” of Kaiser Wilhelm II at the Berlin Court Opera , where he sang in the 1904 premiere of the opera Der Roland von Berlin ( Ruggiero Leoncavallo ). There he also worked in Fierrabras by Franz Schubert , in Heilmar der Narr by Wilhelm Kienzl and in Der Wald by Ethel Smyth . He showed his interpretations of the Wagner figures of Beckmesser and Alberich on many European stages.

He should not be confused with the bass player of the same name, Carl Nebe (* 1868), who was mainly active as a concert and entertainment singer and who sang numerous records.

  3. cf. Nebe, Carl . In: Kutsch, Riemens: Großes Sängerlexikon : Contrary to previous assumptions, there are probably no records at all by the bassist of the Berlin court opera Carl Nebe. All records or cylinders sung about under the name Carl Nebe come from the bass player of the same name, Carl Nebe (* 1868).
