Carl Pott

Carl Pott (born May 9, 1906 in Solingen ; † May 1985 ibid) was a German cutlery manufacturer and industrial designer .

life and work

Carl Pott was born in Solingen as the son of Carl Hugo Pott . His father founded the C. Hugo Pott cutlery factory in Solingen in 1904 . Carl Pott began his training as a damascene and electroplater in 1920 . From 1924 to 1932 Pott attended the technical school for the steel goods industry in Solingen and began to work artistically and creatively.

Influenced by the guidelines of the Deutscher Werkbund and the Bauhaus , Pott pursued the goal of making practicality, simplicity and material justice the design principle of his modern design for cutlery and other products . In the course of his artistic life, Carl Pott worked with numerous artists such as Wilhelm Wagenfeld , Elisabeth Treskow , Hermann Gretsch , Alexander Schaffner , Hans Schwippert , Josef Hoffmann and Paul Voss . Pott produced more than 30 cutlery models and many table accessories.

In 1964, cutlery by Carl Pott was shown at the documenta III in Kassel in the Industrial Design department . Pott was awarded the gold medals of the triennials in Milan in 1940, 1951, 1954 and 1960 and the world exhibition in Brussels in 1958 . In 1973 he received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class for his work, which made a significant contribution to the international reputation of the German steel goods industry and German industrial design.
