Carl Roschet
Carl Roschet (* 1867 ; † January 25, 1925 in Basel ) was a Swiss painter and heraldist .
Life
Carl Roschet came from a Huguenot family who had immigrated to Basel. With him the sex died out in the male line.
He designed many ex libris on commission . His signature on the works consists of his initials and is usually an R enclosed in a C. A number of watercolors with Alpine motifs are also known from auctions . He also left behind color lithographs and oil paintings. At the beginning of the 20th century, Roschet was one of the first artists to paint lanterns for the Basel carnival cliques. Roschet worked for the " United Kleinbasler ".
Roschet was a member of the Swiss Heraldic Society . Since 1916 he has devoted himself almost exclusively to heraldry. Roschet became known as a heraldist through his illustration of the Basel city arms book and the Basel arms calendar published by Wilhelm Richard Staehelin .
The book of arms for the city of Basel was published by Wilhelm Richard Staehelin, who also wrote the genealogical explanations with August Burckhardt and Arno Lutz. It was published by the Helbing Lichtenhahn publishing house . The “book” is actually a set of tables, each of the eleven episodes consisting of around 50 tables - a total of 551 heraldic tablets. The Basel coat of arms calendar was published in five years (1917; 1918; 1919; 1920; 1927). After Roschets death (1925) Lothar Albrecht took over the illustration of the last year.
