Carl Schapira
Carl Schapira (born June 13, 1879 in Danzig ; † May 1957 in New York City ) was a German-American electrical engineer specializing in high-frequency technology and an art collector.
Life
In 1906, Schapira designed an arc transmitter for the Telefunken company . Schapira wrote his doctoral thesis about it and was a member of the board a good 10 years later. He and his family moved into a representative apartment in Berlin near the Schöneberg city park at Grunewaldstrasse 55. Through his collecting activities, he supported the work of the impressionist Lesser Ury, among other things . After the First World War, he signed patent contracts for Telefunken with the industry giants from Great Britain, France and the USA. In doing so, he made a significant contribution to Telefunken becoming a global brand.
In 1933, Schapira had to leave the board because of his Jewish descent. He went into exile in Madrid and took Spanish citizenship, but continued to work for Telefunken. In March 1941 Schapira moved to the USA. In New York he worked for the Radio Corporation of America . In 1948 he took on US citizenship under the name Carlos Soria.
