Schill attended elementary school in Osthofen and from 1873 the secondary school in Worms. In 1880 he went to Bad Dürkheim to work with a master cooper for eight months and then worked as a brewing boy in his parents' malt house and in the Lanz brewery near Offenbach. In 1881 he attended the brewery school in Worms and in 1881 joined the Leibgarde Infantry Regiment (1st Grand Ducal Hessian) No. 115 in Darmstadt as a one-year volunteer , where he left as a sergeant a year later. He then joined his parents' business and with a happy hand led the expansion of the winery and the malt house, which he was able to hand over to his son Otto in 1919.

Honorary positions

Schill was elected to the local council in 1898 and worked here for over 25 years. In 1900 he was elected to the municipal council and the Hessian district school administration. In 1901 he became a member of the Hessian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and later appointed to the District and Reich Railway Council. Furthermore, he was chairman of the Rheinhessischer Elektrizitätsverband (Rheinhessischer Elektrizitätsverband) and the water supply association, and in this function he played a key role in bringing this institution to Osthofen. In 1908 he and Albert Wander, a cousin on his mother's side, founded a German subsidiary of the Wander factory in Osthofen for the production of Ovaltine . The malt for this came from our own malt house. As deputy chairman, he was a member of the supervisory board until his death.

At his suggestion, the Osthofen gymnasium was converted into a hospital during the First World War, where more than 1,500 wounded were treated. For this achievement he received the Medal of Honor for War Merit in 1916 and the Red Cross Medal 1st Class in 1918.
