Carl Schweckendieck
Georg Ludwig Carl Schweckendieck (born January 13, 1843 in Emden ; † January 17, 1906 in Berlin ) was a lawyer and real secret senior government councilor in the Prussian Ministry of Public Works. From 1861 to 1864 he studied law and political science in Heidelberg and Göttingen. From 1894 to 1898 he represented his hometown in the Prussian House of Representatives , to which he belonged from 1899 until his death as a member of the electoral district of Harburg.
Together with Emden's Mayor Leo Fürbringer (term of office from 1875 to 1913), Schweckendieck was the main initiator of the construction of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the expansion of the Emden port at that time .
Carl Schweckendieck died just a few days after his 63rd birthday in Berlin in mid-January 1906. He was buried in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
The city of Emden granted Schweckendieck honorary citizenship. A street in the administrative district is named after him, on which there is also a monument to Schweckendieck.
