Karl von Steiff

Karl von Steiff , also Carl von Steiff (born March 24, 1846 in Geislingen an der Steige ; † January 23, 1914 in Stuttgart ) was a German librarian at the Royal Public Library in Stuttgart.

Life

Steiff was the son of the senior official geometer in Geislingen an der Steige. After attending the seminary and the Evangelical Abbey in Tübingen, he was in the intermittent church service from 1868 to 1872, and then from 1872 to 1874 as a member of the abbey. After a scientific trip he became parish administrator in Leutkirch in 1875 and there in 1876 a deacon and preceptor.

In 1877 he started working as a librarian in the University Library of Tübingen . There he became a librarian with the title of professor in 1887, before moving to the Royal Public Library in Stuttgart the following year in 1888. On July 1, 1900, Steiff became senior librarian, i.e. head of the library. In 1913 he had to be removed from office for health reasons before he died a year later.

Steiff published in particular on the history of books in Württemberg . Together with Gebhard Mehring he also published the historical songs and sayings of Württemberg (completed in 1915).
