Carl Stock (artist)

Carl Stock (born March 10, 1876 in Kesselstadt ; † April 5, 1945 in Frankfurt a. M. ) was a German sculptor, draftsman, medalist and artisan.

Stock studied at the State Drawing Academy in Hanau with Max Wiese , where he also became a master student. At the age of 16 he already received the state award and the large silver medal of the academy. He then went to Munich , where he and his former classmate Adolf Amberg created a silver fountain for the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris . This was awarded a bronze medal in the exhibition. In 1905 Stock was in Berlin , where he worked for Ludwig Hoffmann as a building sculptor before he went to the silver goods factory P. Bruckmann & Sons in Heilbronn , where he became artistic director. From 1908 Stock worked in the Städel studio house in Frankfurt a. M. Here he mainly created architectural sculptures, grave monuments and fountain figures as well as medals.

During the First World War, Stock made the wooden statue of the “Iron Eagle”, which was officially inaugurated in June 1915, a nail figure with which donations were collected by hammering nails. Stock also designed posters, postcards and a medal “Help for German prisoners of war” in the context of this campaign.
