Carl Tchilling-Hiryan
Carl Tchilling-Hiryan (originally Armenian Կարլ Չիլինգիրյան Karl Tschilingirjan , * 1910 ; † 1987 in Hamburg ) was a businessman and entrepreneur of Armenian- German descent and co-founder of the Tchibo group.
family
His father, the Hamburg-based businessman and coffee roaster Karabet Martin Tchilinghiryan, was born in 1869 in Aydın in what is now Turkey's west. His father Karabet Mardiros Tchilinghiryan, who died in Aydın, was also a merchant. Carl's mother Erna, née Petersen, came from a Hamburg Lutheran family. Her father was a gardener. Carl's siblings Lotte, Wilhelm († 1941) and Margarethe were also born in Hamburg.
Carl Tchilling-Hiryan died in 1987 and was buried in a family grave at the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg together with his parents Karabet Tchilinghiryan (1869–1927) and Erna Tchilinghiryan, nee. Petersen (1887–1959), buried.
Entrepreneurship
In 1949, together with Max Herz , he founded the company "Frisch-Röst-Kaffee Carl Tchilling GmbH", today's Tchibo Group.
To make it easier for future Tchibo customers to pronounce his Armenian name, Tchilinghiryan changed the spelling of his name to "Carl Tchilling-Hiryan". To Tchilling-Hiryan and heart both before the establishment of the Tchibo Group where each 20,000 German marks involved, Tchilling-Hiryan acted as dried fruit specialist with dates, figs and trail mix .
Because of business problems from Max Herz, Tchilling-Hiryan initially received a loan of DM 75,000, which was later repaid by assigning shares to Tchibo. Herz took over the entire company for an estimated sum of DM 225,000.
