Carl Wilhelm (choir director)
Carl Wilhelm (born September 5, 1815 in Schmalkalden ; † August 26, 1873 there ) was a German conductor , choirmaster and composer , his most famous composition is the song Die Wacht am Rhein .
Life
Wilhelm was a student of Aloys Schmitt . From 1841 to 1864 he was the conductor of the Krefeld Liedertafel . In 1853 he was accepted into the Freemasons ' league .
In Krefeld in 1854 he set the poem Die Wacht am Rhein , written by Max Schneckenburger in 1840, to music. In recognition of the success and the national importance of this song, he received numerous honors and medals on June 24, 1871, a personal letter of appreciation from Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck . From the same year he received an annual donation of 3,000 marks from the German government , which was more than four times the wages of the workers at the time.
Another well-known composition is the Cavalry March (Wrangel March) , AM III, 53 .
From 1865 onwards, Wilhelm worked as a music association conductor in Schmalkalden.
