Carlo Agostino Badia

Carlo Agostino Badia (* 1672, presumably in Verona ; † September 23, 1738 in Vienna ) was an Italian composer of the late Baroque.

Life

Nothing is documented about Badia's youth and education; he was first mentioned when he was around 20 years old thanks to the composition of his operas and oratorios from his time in Innsbruck in the early 1690s, when he was in the service of Duchess Eleonora Maria . In 1693 he followed the Duchess to Vienna. In Vienna, Badia was employed by Emperor Leopold I as composer in 1694 , and the Emperor sent him to Rome for further training . From 1697 Badia was probably back in Vienna, where compositions by him were being performed at that time. In October 1700 he married the soprano Anna Maria Lisi, who was also employed at the Viennese court. For a long time it was assumed that Badia was a Venetian, but the entry in the church book at his first wedding shows that he was born in " Warona im Welschland ", which means Verona.

After the death of Leopold I, the couple was able to keep their positions under Joseph I. Badia's most important works were written between 1700 and 1710. In addition to the operas, there were also numerous oratorios and cantatas, which were often composed for the Ursuline monastery in Vienna and often performed there in the presence of the emperor. After the death of Emperor Joseph Badia kept his job and composed little, his works show little innovation after 1710, consequently Emperor Charles VI preferred . Antonio Caldara's works in keeping with contemporary tastes .

Carlo Agostino Badia, like Giovanni Battista Bononcini, played a key role in the introduction of the late Baroque style of music in Vienna. Around 35 oratorios and 35 cantatas as well as some arias for two sopranos and harpsichord can be attributed to Badia.
