Carlo Amoretti

Carlo Amoretti (born March 16, 1741 in Oneglia, today Imperia (Liguria) , † March 24, 1816 in Milan ) was an Italian scholar.

Life

After the son of a wealthy merchant attended the Piarist school, Amoretti entered the Augustinian order in 1757 at the age of 16 . To deepen his studies, he first went to Pavia, then to Parma. There he soon became an advocate of the reforms of the Minister Guillaume Du Tillot . After the abolition of the order in the Duchy of Parma in 1769, Amoretti became a secular clergyman and received a professorship for canon law at the University of Parma , which he lost after the overthrow of Du Tillot such as Claude-François-Xavier Millot , Francesco Soave and other supporters of the minister. Amoretti settled in Milan, where he was able to secure his livelihood as an educator in the house of Marchese Ferdinando Cusani . In addition to numerous other publications, an Italian edition of the history of art in antiquity by Johann Joachim Winckelmann appeared in 1779 . In 1797 Amoretti was appointed librarian of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana .

Amoretti has rendered outstanding services to mineralogy as well as to palaeography and art history . From 1808 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

The lawyer Maria Amoretti (1756–1787) was his niece.
