Claude-François-Xavier Millot (born March 5, 1726 in Ornans , today's Doubs department , † March 20, 1785 in Paris ) was a French cleric and historian.

Life

Millot received his education at a school run by Jesuits and after the obligatory novitiate he joined the Societas Jesu . Later he taught at several religious schools, u. a. also in Lyon where he worked as a lecturer in eloquence .

In 1757 Millot published an Eloge on Montesquieu (1689–1755) and then had to leave his order. The Archbishop of Lyon , Antoine de Montazet (1713–1788), therefore brought him to Lyon and appointed him to be his vicar .

More historians than clerics, Millot published several historical works over the next few years, with which he attracted the attention of Guillaume du Tillot (Minister of the Duchy of Parma ). This brought him to the Collège de la noblesse he founded in Parma . There he worked for some time as a lecturer in history.

Millot later returned to France and settled in Paris. On December 4, 1777, the Académie française appointed him the successor to the late writer Jean-Baptiste Louis Gresset (1709–1777) on armchair 5 (seat 5). The encyclopaedist André Morellet (1727-1819) followed him in 1785 in this place.

In 1778, Millot was appointed as the preceptor (private tutor) of Louis, Duc d'Enghien (1772-1804). After resigning from this office a few years later, Millot retired into private life. He died 14 days after his 58th birthday on March 20, 1785 in Paris, where he also found his final resting place.

Quote

On the occasion of Millot's admission to the Académie française, d'Alembert coined the bon mot “Millot has nothing of a priest in it but the dress”.
