Wilhelm Ernst Christiani (born April 23, 1731 in Kiel ; † September 1, 1793 ibid) was a German Lutheran university professor , librarian and author.

Life

Christiani was born the son of Konrad Christiani. After graduating from the Kiel Gelehrtenschule he studied successively in Kiel , Jena and Rostock degree programs theology , ancient languages , mathematics and history .

In 1748 he enrolled at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel for theology . He later moved to the University of Jena , where he continued his studies and in 1758 joined the Herzoglich Teutsche Gesellschaft . In November 1756 he enrolled at the University of Rostock and then in April 1757 became a master of philosophy. After completing his studies, he returned to his hometown. There he was first promoted to a doctorate, and in 1761 he was employed as an associate professor for natural law and politics . Three years later he was promoted to the rank of full professor. He also took over the post of librarian . When the then professor for eloquence and poetry , Schwanitz, fell ill for a long time and his “substitute professor ”, the philologist Wilhelm August Ernesti, did not appear, Wilhelm Ernst Christiani took over Schwanitz's duties in 1765.

In 1770 he also received the chair of history from Professor Köhler, who emigrated to Göttingen in 1769 . In addition to lectures on universal history , European history , church history , German imperial history and patriotic history , he organized four festive events a year at Christian-Albrechts-Universität: at Easter, at Pentecost, on Michaelmas and Christmas. Because of his professorship for eloquence, Christiani was given the task of drafting programs and giving speeches for the sovereign's birthdays. In 1773 Christiani founded a literary society together with a colleague, which was a kind of reading society . In 1777 he became the Royal Danish Judicial Council and in 1790 he entered the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences , based in Copenhagen .

Wilhelm Ernst Christiani was also active as a writer. He wrote numerous memoranda , essays, speeches and programs . Two speeches deserve special mention: the speech with the title “Of the true concept of the ruling religion of a state”, given in 1767 on the occasion of the birthday of the Grand Duke at that time and the speech given in 1788 about the then Chancellor Johann Andreas Cramer . Christiani's book “The good cause of dissidents in Poland ” , published in 1767, is also worth mentioning . Between 1775 and 1779 he worked on his work "History of the Duchies of Schleswig and Hollstein ". From 1786 to 1789 Christiani published four programs on "Materials on the history of Duke Johann the Younger , the progenitor of the Augustenburg house".
