Carlo Casini (born March 4, 1935 in Florence , † March 23, 2020 in Rome ) was an Italian politician of the Christian Democratic party UDC and a member of the European Parliament in the Group of the European People's Party .

Professional career

Casini graduated in law in 1958 and then worked as a lawyer in 1960, as a judge from 1961 to 1966, from 1966 as deputy public prosecutor in Florence and from 1999 as a judge at the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation. He also worked as a publicist and was president of the Italian rights movement . From 2000 to 2008 he was a lecturer in international law, human rights and bioethics at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome . He was a full member of the Pontifical Academy for Life until 2017 .

Political career

From 1979 to 1992 Casini was a member of the Italian Parliament for the Democrazia Cristiana (DC) . Here he was the rapporteur for the code of criminal procedure, for adoption, for drugs and for terrorism.

After the decline of the DC, he joined the Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI) in 1994 and then the Centro Cristiano Democratico (CCD), which finally became part of the UDC in 1996. Casini had the same last name as the chairman of the UDC, Pier Ferdinando Casini , but was not related to him.

In the European elections in 1984 , Casini was elected to the European Parliament for the first time , to which he was a member until 1999 , including as chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee . In 2006 he moved into the European Parliament again as a replacement for his party friend Armando Dionisi . In the European elections in Italy in 2009 , he was confirmed and then in parliament chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs selected. Casini was a member of the Conference of Committee Chairs and a delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly . Casini was deputy in the Committee on Foreign Affairs and in the Delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China .
