Carlo D'Aprile

Carlo D'Aprile (* 1621 in Genoa , † 1668 in Palermo ) was an Italian architect and sculptor of the Baroque in Sicily .

Life

D'Aprile was born in Genoa as the son of a marble sculptor. Works by him are only proven in Palermo. His training course and when he came to Palermo is unknown. It is documented that he was commissioned by Archbishop Martino de Leon (1650–1655) in Palermo in 1655 to work on road and town construction projects as well as the decorative design of the cathedral . For example, from 1655 to 1656 D'Aprile created the marble statues of Saints Sergio, Agathon, Sylvia, Agathe and Katharina for the balustrade of the cathedral square. For the niches of the Quattro Canti he made statues of the kings Charles V, Philip II, and Philip III from 1661 to 1663. and Philip IV. The sculpture of Santa Rosalia on the facade of the Palazzo delle Aquile, made in 1661, comes from him.

He worked with Gaspare Guercio on the facade design of the Church of San Matteo (until 1664) and on the bronze monument of King Philip IV for the Piazza Reale in Palermo (destroyed in 1848).
