Carlo Tonon (born March 25, 1955 in San Vendemiano , † June 17, 1996 in Stabiuzzo ) was an Italian cyclist.

Athletic career

In 1977 and 1980 Carlo Tonon won the domestic race GP Industria e Commercio , and in 1981 the GP di Poggiana . In 1982 he received his first contract with the Inoxpran-Pentole Posate team . In the same year he started the Tour de France for the first time and was 116th in the overall standings. In the following year he finished 134th at the Giro d'Italia .

In 1984 Tonon started the tour for the second time . On the 19th stage from La Plagne to Morzine, he collided with a spectator, fell and suffered a fractured skull base . He was then in a coma for two months . Tonon was severely disabled after this accident . In 1996 he committed suicide .

The Carlo Tonon e Denis Zanette Memorial has been held in Brugnera every year since 2003 , commemorating Tonon and Zanette , who died in 2003 of a heart defect .
