Carlos González Cruchaga

Carlos González Cruchaga (born June 8, 1921 in Santiago de Chile , Chile , †  September 21, 2008 in Lircay near Talca , Chile) was Bishop of Talca .

Life

Carlos González Cruchaga, cousin and godchild of the Chilean Jesuit and saint Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga , studied agricultural sciences from 1937 after attending the Jesuit College of San Ignacio and entered the seminary in Santiago in 1938 . He studied theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and received by Archbishop José María Caro Rodríguez the priesthood on September 23, 1944, the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile . After pastoral care, he worked from 1947 to 1949 for "Asesor Nacional de la Juventud Obrera Católica (JOC)", the national Catholic child and youth welfare organization in Chile. He was prefect at the seminary of Santiago, later its rector.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Talca in 1967. He received his episcopal ordination on May 7, 1967, the Bishop of Valdivia José Manuel Santos Ascarza OCD; Co- consecrators were Bernardino Piñera Carvallo , Bishop of Temuco, and Gabriel Larraín Valdivieso , Auxiliary Bishop in Santiago de Chile. He was President of the Chilean Bishops' Conference from 1988 to 1992 . As an advocate for human rights under the dictator Augusto Pinochet , he advocated the democratization of Chile.

His age-related resignation was granted in 1996 by John Paul II . He died of complications from liver cancer.
